Amalfi Coast wheelchair accessibility guide

Research Amalfi Coast for wheelchair users and caregivers: getting around, terrain, healthcare, costs, climate, accessible things to do, and practical caveats before booking.

Last updated 6/30/2026

At a glance

The Amalfi Coast's **cliff roads, vertical villages, and endless stairs** make independent wheelchair travel **very difficult**. Sorrento and the waterfront of Amalfi town are among the more manageable bases; Positano is largely **inaccessible** beyond a few lookout points.

Getting around

SITA bus routes along the coast are **not reliably accessible**. Private car with driver, or **accessible boat tours** from Sorrento, reduce road stress. Trains to Sorrento from Naples are step-free at many stations — book **Sorrento lift** station access in advance.

Terrain & mobility

**Extremely steep** in Positano, Ravello access roads, and Path of the Gods trailheads. Amalfi town harbour level is **relatively flat** for a short radius. Sorrento centro has **partial** step-free streets.

Healthcare & care

Emergency care in Sorrento and Salerno; major trauma centres in Naples. Carry medications — DME rental in Naples may require advance booking.

Costs & housing

Premium tourism pricing. See Costs tab — **from ~$3,100/mo** estimate.

Climate & comfort

Hot summers; mild winters. **A/C** useful in summer lodgings. Rain makes cobblestone slick — solid tyres recommended.

Accessible things to do

Sorrento historic centre (partial)— Main shopping street Corso Italia and Piazza Tasso area have **some** rollable sections; side streets step down to cliffs quickly.

Amalfi town harbour promenade— Flat waterfront from the beach to the cathedral square — **cathedral interior steps limit full visit**; exterior and piazza are manageable.

Positano** — **View from boat or ferry— village itself is **not rollable** for most visitors; do not plan to descend main stair streets independently.

Capri funicular and Blue Grotto** — **Generally not accessible— funicular requires stairs at terminals; grotto boarding involves low boat transfer.

Boat tours from Sorrento or Amalfi** — **Best way to see the coast— select operators offering **fixed seating and stable boarding**; book "accessible" or private charter when possible.

Community & language

English in tourism. Italian Law 104 on disability support applies; **UNESCO villages predate modern access norms**.

Would we recommend it?

Only with boat-based sightseeing and a Sorrento or Amalfi base— not recommended for Positano lodging or independent path-of-the-gods hiking in a wheelchair.
